How To Add Shutdown, Restart Tiles To Start Screen In Windows 8

Add Shutdown Tiles to Start Screen in Widows 8 :

In earlier versions of Windows, one could just open the Start menu and access the all shut down options.

But in Windows 8, you need to open the Settings charm by moving mouse cursor to the upper-right or lower-right corner of the screen, and then clicking Settings to access shut down, restart, hibernate and sleep options.

You can also access the settings charm by pressing Windows logo key + I hotkey.

You can also access Windows Shut Down dialog from desktop by clicking Alt + F4 keys.

Now come to the topics. Here I describe you how to pin Shutdown tile to the Start screen for the quick access. To do that many users install third-party program but if you want add shut down option to the Start screen without using third-party tools, you need to follow the given below method :

1. First, we need to create a shortcut icon for Shutdown option. To do that, right-click on desktop -> click New -> and then click Shortcut to open Create Shortcut window.

 2. In the "Type the location of the item" section you need to type the following value :
To create shutdown shortcut :
shutdown.exe(space)/s(space)/t(space)00  that means,  shutdown.exe /s /t 00

(use given below values if you want to create shortcuts for restart, log off or switch user)

To create restart shortcut :
shutdown.exe /r /t 00

To create log off shortcut :
shutdown.exe /l

To create switch user shortcut :
tsdiscon.exe
3. Click Next button.
4. In the "Type a name for this shortcut" section type Shutdown, Restart, Log off or Switch User (depending on for which you're creating shortcut) and then click Finish button.
5. Now you have the shortcut on your desktop. Right-click on the shortcut and click Properties.

6. Switch to Shortcut tab and click Change icon button to browse an icon file that suites your shortcut.

7. Select an icon, click Ok button and then click Apply button.

 8. Almost done, now right-click on that shortcut and click Pin to Start to create your own shut down tile on the Start screen. Your new tile should now appear on the Start screen.
  • You may move the tile from the end to the beginning of the Start screen for quick access.
  • You can now delete the icons that displayed at Desktop.

 Thank you.
